چکیده
THE most successful outcome of pancreatic islet allotransplantation has been in patients with upper abdominal malignancies who have undergone cluster resection followed by liver replacement. I.2 Between January 1990 and June 1992. 11 patients underwent this procedure; six (55%) of whom were insulin-independent until demise, due to recurrence of the primary disease. We report herein. a 58-month postoperative metabolic course of the longest survivor of islet allotransplantation. who underwent upper abdominal exenteration for hepatocellular carcinoma necessitating combined liver and islet transplantation.

Detection of intrahepatic human islets following combined liver-islet allotransplantation.
This article describes the localization of intact insulin-containing intrahepatic islets after combined liver-islet allotransplantation. The patient was a 36-year-old woman who underwent upper abdominal exenteration for neuroendocrine carcinoma; 289,000 islets were transplanted via portal vein infusion immediately after complete revascularization of the liver. Immunosuppression was with low-dos...
متن کاملImmunohistochemical characterization of pancreatic duodenal homeobox protein-1, neurogenin-3 and insulin protein expressions in islet-mesenchymal cell in vitro interactions from injured adult pancreatic tissues: a morphochronological evaluation
Objective(s): The use of a co-culture of islets with mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) is a promising therapy in islet transplantation to revert hyperglycaemia, but the resulting insulin-producing cells (IPCs) express low levels of pancreas endocrine developmental genes. This study aims to investigate the morphochronology of a co-culture of islets with MSCs from injured adult pancreata, and char...
متن کاملOutcome of human islet isolation and allotransplantation in 20 consecutive cases.
This report provides our initial experience on islet isolation and intrahepatic allotransplantation in 20 patients. In Group 1, 10 patients underwent combined liver-islet allotransplantation following upper-abdominal exenteration for cancer. One patient underwent pancreatic islet allograft after near total pancreatectomy for chronic pancreatitis. In Group 2, 3 Type I diabetic patients received ...
متن کاملIslet autotransplantation restores normal glucose tolerance in a patient with chronic pancreatitis.
Impaired glucose tolerance is a frequent complication of chronic pancreatitis (CP) that over time leads to diabetes (1). Intractable abdominal pain from CP that can no longer be managed by oral pancreatic enzymes and by narcotic analgesics is treated by surgery. To avoid diabetes onset following pancreatectomy, combined islet autotransplantation has been offered to the patients who suffered fro...
متن کاملQuantitative Assessment of Proliferative Effects of Oral Vanadium on Pancreatic Islet Volumes and Beta Cell Numbers of Diabetic Rats
Background: Oral vanadyl sulfate (vanadium) induces normoglycemia, proliferates beta cells and prevents pancreatic islet atrophy in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Soteriological method is used to quantitate the proliferative effects of vanadium on beta-cell numbers and islet volumes of normal and diabetic rats. Methods: Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were made diabetic with intravenous s...
